US military launches new strikes on Iran... explosions in Bushehr and Asaluyeh
(CNN) -- The US military announced new airstrikes against Iran, stating that the strikes were in response to Iran's Revolutionary Guard targeting a container ship flying the flag of Cyprus while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement released by US Central Command on Sunday, it said: 'At 7:15 pm Eastern Time today, US Central Command forces began the third round of strikes this week against Iran.'
The statement added that the strikes came 'after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched a direct attack on the vessel GFS Galaxy, a container ship flying the flag of Cyprus, while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz.'
The US statement indicated that one civilian crew member is missing, and the vessel is unable to continue its voyage due to a fire onboard and severe damage to the engine room.
The statement said: 'Iran was given another opportunity to prove its commitment to the memorandum of understanding after being held responsible for previous attacks on commercial ships, but it failed again.'
Iran's official Press TV reported explosions in the southern cities of Bushehr and Asaluyeh early Sunday.
Iran's state-run IRIB News Agency also reported explosions in the cities of Bandar Abbas and Sirik, while Mehr News Agency said explosions were heard on Qeshm Island, according to Reuters.
Earlier on Sunday, Iran's Revolutionary Guard announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz 'until further notice,' stating that no vessel would be allowed to pass.
In a statement published by Iranian state media, it said: 'Several ships attempted to sail in the unauthorized route, ignoring warnings... Consequently, one ship was subject to warning fire which caused it to stop.'
The Revolutionary Guard also indicated that 'if the aggressor makes a mistake and launches a new aggression against us, using the incident it caused itself as a pretext, we will respond forcefully and will target the enemy's new bases in the region,' referring to the United States.
US President Donald Trump indicated on Friday that the US and Iran would continue truce talks, despite the US conducting airstrikes despite the ceasefire.
