The US Army announced Saturday evening that it had launched new airstrikes to "punish" Iran for its attacks on US forces in Jordan that killed two American soldiers, the first such casualties since the resumption of hostilities with Tehran.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement that the strikes began at 22:00 GMT to "degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, and to swiftly punish the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for the attacks it carried out against US service members in Jordan last night."

For their part, the Iranian news agencies Fars and Tasnim reported that US attacks took place near the city of Sirik in southern Iran.

The US military also targeted an area near the city of Hajjiabad in southern Iran, according to local media. Explosions were heard in the city of Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island, both overlooking the Strait of Hormuz, as well as in the city of Bushehr (south). US strikes also hit a site near Shadegan.

Meanwhile, Tasnim reported that US bombing targeted the Falahiyeh area southeast of Ahvaz.

Collapse of the agreement

It is noted that this is the eighth consecutive night of US airstrikes against Iran.

CENTCOM had earlier Saturday announced the deaths of two US service members and the loss of another in Iranian strikes on Jordan on Friday, amid the exchange of attacks between Washington and Tehran.

It is worth noting that the interim agreement reached last month to end the war collapsed on July 7, when Tehran targeted ships in the Strait of Hormuz, and the United States responded with airstrikes on Iran.

Since then, Tehran has announced the closure of the strait, while Washington has reimposed its blockade on Iranian ports.
