US announces destruction of IRGC tower used to track and target ships in Strait of Hormuz
(CNN) -- The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Friday that the United States destroyed an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps observation tower on the southeastern coast of Iran on Thursday.
CENTCOM said in a statement on Friday via platform 'X', formerly Twitter: 'On July 16, US forces successfully destroyed the observation tower at Chabahar port - Shahid Kalantari, part of a maritime surveillance network stretching along the Iranian coast overlooking the Gulf of Oman, which the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps had used for decades to track and target commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.'
It added: 'The destruction of this tower directly weakens the IRGC's ability to coordinate attacks targeting innocent civilian ship crews. Furthermore, this strike helps protect freedom of navigation in territorial waters for all ships, except those attempting to breach the US naval blockade currently imposed on Iran.'
The targeting of this facility comes as the United States continues its efforts to limit Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz.
