Syria's Interior Ministry announced today the arrest of the official responsible for sarin gas warehouses and chemical manufacturing in the former regime.

In a statement, the ministry said its security units in Latakia province carried out an operation resulting in the arrest of Colonel Ahmed Habib Ali, a chemical weapons specialist, noting that he previously served as head of the Center for Scientific Studies and Research and was responsible for sarin gas warehouses and chemical manufacturing in Unit 417.

20 bombs loaded with sarin gas

It added that preliminary investigations showed the detainee oversaw the manufacture of about 20 bombs loaded with sarin gas, each weighing 250 kilograms, which were used in attacks targeting Syrian cities and towns in 2013 and 2017. The ministry indicated that investigations are ongoing to uncover and document all crimes attributed to him, in preparation for referring him to the competent judiciary and completing legal proceedings against him.
