The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, called for military restraint and avoiding any operations targeting sites linked to Iran's nuclear program, following an attack on the under-construction Darkhovin nuclear plant, which Tehran accused the United States of carrying out.

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran said that US forces carried out an attack on the Darkhovin nuclear plant, located in southwestern Iran, using a number of projectiles, and described the operation as a violation of international law.

The International Atomic Energy Agency clarified that the Darkhovin plant, construction of which began in 2022, is still in its early stages and did not contain any nuclear material during the agency's last inspection visit, stressing that the attack does not pose any radiological risk.

Grossi reiterated his call to avoid any military escalation near facilities linked to the nuclear program, noting that the agency continues its contacts with Iranian authorities to follow up on developments of the incident.

This comes amid escalating tension between the United States and Iran, after Washington launched new strikes it said were in response to the killing of two American soldiers in an attack targeting US forces in Jordan. Meanwhile, Tehran announced carrying out attacks on several targets, along with intercepting ships it said attempted to cross the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian nuclear program remains one of the most prominent points of dispute between Tehran and Washington.
