(CNN)—Activists and local and regional Syrian media outlets circulated the news that interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa called Abdullah Alloush, son of Mohammed Zahran Alloush, the former commander who was killed during battles with the regime of ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, to congratulate him on his wedding. Below is a brief overview of him according to what was reported by Syria's official Al-Ikhbariya channel:

The martyr Mohammed Zahran Alloush is considered the founder and leader of the 'Jaish al-Islam' faction, one of the most prominent factions of the Syrian revolution that operated in Eastern Ghouta in the Damascus countryside. He was born in the city of Douma in 1971, studied Sharia at Damascus University, and then completed his postgraduate studies at the Islamic University of Medina.

He was arrested in 2009 at Sednaya Prison and was released under a general amnesty in 2011, before founding 'Liwa al-Islam' in 2012, which evolved in September 2013 into 'Jaish al-Islam' after a number of factions merged under his leadership.

Alloush led a number of battles against the forces of the fallen regime, and also oversaw the formation of the unified military command for the Ghouta factions, and contributed to expelling ISIS cells from the area.
