(CNN)-- The Iran-backed Yemeni Houthi group announced on Monday imposing a "maritime navigation ban" on Saudi Arabia, attributing it to what it described as a "comprehensive Saudi blockade on ports and airports by land, sea, and air."

The Houthi military spokesman, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, published a statement announcing "the ban on maritime navigation for the Saudi enemy... according to the equation of blockade for blockade, and it will come into effect from the moment of this statement's announcement."

The statement added that the group, which controls the capital Sanaa and accused Saudi Arabia of targeting its airport last week, "has the right to confront the comprehensive escalation with comprehensive escalation and establish this equation."

It added that its forces "are fully ready for all options."

Saudi Arabia has not issued any statements yet in response to the Houthi statement.

Last week, the Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of launching airstrikes on the airport of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.

The Ministry of Defense of the internationally recognized Yemeni government appeared to claim responsibility for the strikes, after indicating that its patience had run out and that it would confront and deal with hostile aircraft violating Yemeni airspace.

The Yemeni government accused Iran of sending a flight to the Houthis carrying military and security personnel, as well as Iranian experts in the field of drone development and missile systems.

Tensions have escalated between the Houthis and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia over a range of issues, including the long-standing Saudi blockade on Houthi-controlled areas in northern Yemen, and direct flights between Tehran and Sanaa.
