(CNN) – Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday it summoned the Iranian ambassador and handed him a protest note over the targeting of a Kuwaiti tanker while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

The ministry said in a statement that Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Toutounji was summoned because of the tanker incident, which “resulted in injuries to a number of its crew members.”

The statement referred to “the escalation of the heinous aggression launched by Iran against the State of Kuwait since February 28, 2026, including the inciting and provocative statements issued by the Iranian side, which constitutes a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the State of Kuwait, its territorial integrity and interests, a threat to the security and freedom of international navigation, and a breach of international law and the United Nations Charter.”

Kuwait renewed its demand for Iran to immediately cease its attacks, stressed its right to take necessary measures, and held Iran “fully responsible for this assault and its continued aggression against the State of Kuwait.”

This followed an announcement by the Kuwaiti government on Tuesday that Iran had targeted desalination and power plants overnight, marking the fourth consecutive day of attacks on the country’s critical infrastructure.

Kuwait accused Iran of targeting its power generation and desalination plants multiple times over the past week. Desalination provides about 90% of Kuwait’s freshwater needs.

Kuwait, along with Bahrain and Jordan, is among the countries most targeted by Iran since hostilities resumed between Tehran and Washington this month.
