Iranian media reported on Monday hearing explosions near the city of Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island, both in Hormozgan province in southern Iran.

Mehr News Agency quoted residents of these areas saying the sounds of explosions came from the sea, while no immediate comment was issued by Iranian authorities.

On Sunday, the United States announced launching a new wave of attacks on Iran, in response to the latter's targeting of commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

In response to these attacks, Iran announced targeting US military sites in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and Jordan with missiles.

The Strait of Hormuz region is witnessing security tensions against the backdrop of the war launched by the United States and Israel on Iran on February 28, 2026.

In June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding that included a ceasefire, following Qatari and Pakistani mediation, paving the way for a final agreement to end the war, before US President Donald Trump announced on July 8 the end of the ceasefire due to renewed escalation.
