The Israeli intelligence agency (Mossad) has revealed details of an alleged Iranian conspiracy aimed at harming high-ranking leadership figures within Israel by recruiting elements abroad.

These developments come amid ongoing and escalating security and intelligence tensions in the region.

A statement from the Prime Minister's Office, on behalf of Mossad, clarified that the Iranian Intelligence Ministry sought to dispatch foreign nationals to Israeli territory in order to target prominent figures.

Mossad stated that the ministry "used criminal proxy agents to recruit individuals capable of entering Israel, with the aim of gathering information on potential targets and ultimately carrying out attacks."

The agency noted its cooperation with the internal security service (Shin Bet) as well as international partners to thwart numerous offensive operations orchestrated by Tehran, indicating that these investigations helped save lives and activate legal proceedings against those involved.

The statement added: "Despite these efforts to conceal Iran's direct involvement, the modus operandi via proxies has proven fragile time and again, as operational failures have exposed the Iranian handlers behind the attacks."

Sources told CNN that "Israel is facing an unprecedented wave of domestic espionage since 2023, with at least 60 Israelis charged with spying for Iran, and several sites that the prosecution said the suspected spies photographed were targeted by Iranian missile attacks on Israel during the ongoing conflict with Iran."

These data highlight the overt and covert intelligence war between the two sides, where Tehran often relies on complex networks of agents and intermediaries to carry out its cross-border agendas. In response, Israeli security agencies, represented by Mossad and Shin Bet, continue their intensive efforts in cooperation with their international allies to track these networks and thwart operations before they occur.
