Trump mentions 'a ground campaign that other parties will carry out' amid rising tensions with Iran... What could that mean?
(CNN)-- US President Donald Trump on Tuesday vaguely hinted at the possibility of a ground campaign as tensions escalate in the war with Iran, but he did not provide any specific details.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump commented on the idea of a ground war, saying: "I don't want to do that," adding: "Sometimes there is a need for a ground campaign, but we have other parties that will carry out the ground campaign on our behalf," without specifying who these parties are.
Analysts believe that potential locations for such a campaign include Kharg Island - Iran's main oil export terminal - or the southern coasts of Iran along the Gulf.
But, whether the forces are American or from another country, landing them on Iranian shores - in sufficient numbers to maintain a presence - is a complex and dangerous operation.
Given that amphibious landing operations require specific land and sea conditions to ensure success, the defending side can concentrate its defenses in the expected landing locations.
Approach routes for landing ships can also be mined or blocked with obstacles, and then fire from modern weapons - such as one-way drones (suicide drones) - in addition to traditional artillery, mortars, and light infantry weapons, can be directed at the forces that manage to reach the shore.
Analysts also point out that the logistical requirements to supply the landed forces with ammunition, medical assistance, food, and water make supply ships vulnerable to the same weapons that the invading force faced.
In this context, US Army Captain Daniel Hogstein wrote in the May-June issue of the Army's Military Review magazine that "the balance of power in coastal warfare has shifted strongly in favor of the defender."
US forces in the region:
Media materials from the US Department of Defense show that the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (11th MEU) - normally consisting of more than 2,000 troops - is in the region aboard ships of the Amphibious Ready Group of the USS Boxer.
These expeditionary units are typically used for missions such as evacuations and amphibious operations requiring ship-to-shore movement, like raids and military assaults. These units also include ground and air combat elements, and some of their units receive special training to carry out specialized operations.
Additionally, the Immediate Response Force of the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division can be deployed within hours to carry out missions such as seizing ports or airfields.
