Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa announced his retirement from football after a storied career on the field, the most recent of which was representing his country in the 2026 World Cup.

Ochoa wrote on his social media accounts: 'I gave it my all, and I did not spare a single drop of sweat on the field for the clubs I played for and the national team, and today I hang up my gloves.'

He added: 'Being a goalkeeper means realizing that you may wait 90 minutes for a single moment on which everything depends, and when that moment comes, you cannot hesitate.'

Historic World Cup Achievement

Ochoa, 41, participated in the World Cup 6 times, a record only achieved by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

A Storied Career with the National Team and Clubs

Ochoa was Mexico's starting goalkeeper in three World Cups: Brazil 2014, Russia 2018, and Qatar 2022, while he sat on the bench behind Raúl Rangel in the 2026 World Cup, and his international appearances reached 154 matches.

At the club level, Ochoa had a storied career spanning 22 years, during which he played in France, Spain, Belgium, Italy, and Portugal.
