Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has announced his retirement from football, drawing the curtain on a career that spanned more than two decades.

Ochoa (41) confirmed the move on social media on Tuesday, following his sixth World Cup appearance.

Ochoa came on as a substitute for the final 12 minutes of a match where Mexico beat the Czech Republic 2-0, and enjoyed the applause of the fans at the Estadio Azteca, the stadium where he made his first-team debut for Club América in 2004.

Ochoa wrote on social media: 'I gave everything I had, and I did not spare a single drop of sweat on the field for the clubs I played for and the national team. Today, I hang up my gloves.'

He added: 'Being a goalkeeper means understanding that you may wait 90 minutes for a single moment on which everything depends. When that moment comes, you cannot hesitate.'

Ochoa represented Mexico for the first time in a World Cup during the 2006 tournament in Germany, and continued to appear in the 2010 South Africa, 2014 Brazil, 2018 Russia, and 2022 Qatar editions, which saw his famous penalty save against Poland's Robert Lewandowski.

At club level, Ochoa had a decorated career spanning 22 years, playing in France, Spain, Belgium, Italy, and Portugal.
