A few days after Argentina's defeat in the 2026 World Cup final against Spain, Lisandro Martínez published a message to thank his fans, while also criticizing the detractors of the Argentine national team.

The defender, who had to leave the pitch in the middle of the final due to injury, wrote on his Instagram account: 'With a heart filled with pain because we failed to bring home the cup we all dreamed of, but with indescribable pride in this jersey, my teammates, the coaching staff, administrators, medical team, cooks, equipment managers, and everyone who contributed to making this journey as smooth as possible.'

He continued: 'Above all, I thank you, because you gave us your love, support, and strength, that passion that always sets us apart, and the unity of a people that I hope will remain steadfast over time.'

He added: 'I would like to congratulate Spain on their well-deserved title.'

He went on: 'To our fans, I say: the result does not define the path we traveled. We faced many difficulties, achieved what seemed impossible, never looked for excuses, but always found reasons to keep going.'

He further stated: 'We defended our colors beyond the confines of the pitch, lived unforgettable moments with the national team, alongside our families, and with your unlimited support. Representing you will always be a great honor for us.'

He concluded: 'Always remember that the fall of the great is a source of joy for small-minded people. Thank you all. Take care of our country. I love you, Argentina.'

Argentina failed to become the first nation to win the title back-to-back since Brazil's feat in 1958 and 1962.

The three-time world champions (1978, 1986, 2022) lacked the means to stop the invincible La Roja machine, which won its second title after 2010.
