Aguero attacks Laporte after his statements about Argentina before the 2026 World Cup final
Tensions flared ahead of the 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, after retired Argentine star Sergio Aguero strongly responded to statements by Spanish defender Aymeric Laporte, in which he criticized the refereeing during Argentina's matches.
Laporte had told the Spanish newspaper Marca: 'In the recent matches, we have seen things that truly surprised us, as some situations are overlooked, especially with Argentina, a team that tends to leave its strong mark on its opponents.'

The statements by the Spanish defender sparked Aguero's anger, who played alongside him at Manchester City for three seasons, prompting him to respond on his social media accounts: 'What surprises you? Don't pretend to be strong, you always back down whenever we meet face to face.'
Laporte's comments came amid criticism he directed at the way referees handled the matches of the defending champion, which heightened anticipation for the upcoming clash between Argentina and Spain in the World Cup final, scheduled to be held on Sunday evening in New York.
In a related context, Aguero renewed his praise for Argentina captain Lionel Messi, stressing that what he has been doing in the current tournament is exceptional despite his age.
Aguero said: 'At the age of thirty-nine, he plays as if he were twenty, while we stand behind the cameras. No one will match him, and many years will pass before we see a player like him, neither us nor our children.'
