Emergency services said a 13-year-old teenager died and two other people were injured after a partial collapse of a fountain in western Spain in the early hours of Monday, marring the public celebrations of the country's second World Cup victory in history.

The accident occurred shortly after midnight in the city of Ciudad Rodrigo, a walled medieval town of about 12,000 inhabitants in the province of Salamanca, near the border with Portugal.

Regional emergency services added that hundreds of residents had gathered at the 'Árbol Gordo' fountain in the city center when the upper part of the monument separated and fell on several people.

The city council of Ciudad Rodrigo expressed condolences to the victim's family in a statement.

The statement said: 'The entire city feels this loss and shares the grief of the young boy's friends and family... What was supposed to be a celebration of the Spanish national team's World Cup victory turned into tragedy.'
