A 13-year-old teenager died in Ciudad Rodrigo, western Spain, on Sunday night after a fountain collapsed during celebrations of his country's national team winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to the city council.

In a Facebook post, the city council said: "The City Council of Ciudad Rodrigo expresses its deepest sorrow and extends its condolences on the death of the 13-year-old boy... what should have been a celebration of the Spanish national team's World Cup victory turned into tragedy," also wishing "a speedy recovery to the other injured."

The emergency services of the Castile and León region explained on platform X on Monday morning that "minutes after 00:30 local time, rescue teams received several calls about a fountain collapsing onto a number of people," noting that another young person was injured. According to Spanish media, several revellers had climbed onto this fountain, which collapsed under their weight. The Spanish national team won its second World Cup title, after a first triumph 16 years earlier at the 2010 finals in South Africa, following a victory on Sunday in New Jersey, near New York, against their Argentine opponents, the 2022 champions, with a goal scored by Ferran Torres in the 106th minute of the final match, which went into extra time. Spaniards celebrated the world title throughout the country until late at night. The streets of central Madrid were covered in rubbish, empty beer cans and shards of glass on Monday morning, while municipal teams stepped up their efforts to clean the area quickly before the arrival of the players, expected around midday. The Spanish national team is scheduled to tour the capital's centre before its celebratory procession reaches the Plaza de Cibeles, where Madrid's city hall is located, in the evening.
