A 13-year-old teenager died in Ciudad Rodrigo, western Spain, overnight Sunday-Monday after a fountain collapsed during celebrations of his country's national team winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to the city's municipality.
In a Facebook post, the municipality said: "The Ciudad Rodrigo City Council expresses its deep sorrow and offers its condolences on the death of the 13-year-old boy. What should have been a celebration of the Spanish national team's World Cup victory turned into a tragedy," wishing "a speedy recovery for the other injured."

Emergency services in the Castile and León region explained on platform X Monday morning that "minutes after 00:30 local time, rescue teams received several calls about a fountain collapsing onto a number of people," noting that another young man was injured. According to Spanish media, several revelers climbed onto the fountain, which collapsed under their weight.
The Spanish national team won its second World Cup title, after first triumphing 16 years ago in the 2010 South Africa finals, following its victory Sunday in New Jersey, near New York, over Argentina, the 2022 champion, with a goal scored by Ferran Torres in the 106th minute of the final match, which went to extra time. Spaniards celebrated the world title all over the country until late into the night. The streets of central Madrid on Monday morning were covered in trash, empty beer cans, and glass shards, while municipal teams intensified their efforts to quickly clean the area before the players' expected arrival at noon. The Spanish team is scheduled to parade through the capital before its celebratory motorcade arrives in the evening at the Plaza de Cibeles, where Madrid City Hall is located.
