(CNN) -- The German Football Association announced in a statement on Saturday that it had reached a preliminary agreement with coach Jürgen Klopp for him to take over as head coach of the 'Die Mannschaft' national team.

The German national team had parted ways with Julian Nagelsmann after being eliminated in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The German Football Association said in its statement: 'Association President Bernd Neuendorf and Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke held an intensive meeting with Klopp yesterday (Friday) in New York to discuss the possibility of appointing him as national team coach.'

The statement added: 'During this constructive dialogue, an agreement was reached on the key aspects of a potential contract,' with talks to resume next week.

It continued: 'Both sides are confident that the negotiations—subject to agreement with Red Bull, where Jürgen Klopp works—can ultimately be concluded successfully.'

Klopp had left English club Liverpool in 2024, after winning several titles with them, including the Premier League and the Champions League.

The 59-year-old coach currently holds the position of Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull.
