Uruguay legend Diego Forlán is on the verge of taking over as coach of his country's national team, succeeding Argentine Marcelo Bielsa, who led La Celeste in the 2026 World Cup.

Uruguay, under Bielsa, disappointed its fans in the World Cup, exiting the tournament in the group stage after collecting only two points.

Asked on Teledoce about Uruguay's future coach, Uruguayan Football Association president Ignacio Alonso confirmed that Diego Forlán will take over in the coming months.

According to Foot Mercato, Alonso stated: 'If an agreement is reached with Diego Forlán in the next few hours, he will coach the Under-20 team and the upcoming friendlies of the senior team.'

He added: 'He is very excited, although there are still some details that need to be finalized.'

The former international (112 caps, 36 goals) has two coaching experiences: the first with Peñarol in the Uruguayan Primera División in 2020, and the second with Athens FC in the Greek league in 2021.

The former Atlético Madrid player will face a difficult task: reviving the struggling Uruguayan team, which was eliminated in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup.

The Uruguay legend is expected to lead La Celeste during the international breaks in September, October, and November, and in friendlies until March 2027.

The federation will then decide whether to keep him in the position or appoint a new coach.

It is worth noting that his position may change in the coming weeks, especially after the results of the internal elections at the end of the year.
