(CNN) -- The Portugal national team announced on its X account on Friday the appointment of Jorge Jesus as head coach.
The Portugal national team posted a picture of Jesus during the announcement of the deal, captioned: 'A new chapter begins today. Welcome to the national team.'
Jorge Jesus was appointed as head coach days after Roberto Martinez announced his departure following elimination from the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
Cristiano Ronaldo's teammates lost 1-0 to Spain in the quarter-finals of the World Cup, which was held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Jesus has extensive coaching experience, having led Benfica, Sporting Lisbon, and Sporting Braga in Portugal, Flamengo in Brazil, Fenerbahçe in Turkey, and Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
Jorge Jesus led Al-Nassr to win the Roshn Saudi League title in the 2025/2026 season before deciding to leave the club this summer.
