A press report revealed that Egypt national team coach Hossam Hassan may face punishment from the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) for raising the Palestinian flag after the 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Australia, following a 1-1 draw at the end of regular and extra time yesterday (Friday) in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
A Possible Violation of Regulations
The Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo reported that Hossam Hassan raised the Palestinian flag after the win over Australia, which could be seen as challenging FIFA rules that prohibit or restrict political messages in matches, as he said after the match: 'My heart and soul are with them, I dedicate the victory to the Egyptian and Palestinian peoples.'
Awaiting FIFA’s Position
The Spanish newspaper added: 'It remains to be seen whether FIFA will take any action or impose any sanctions on Hossam Hassan, who will face a tough challenge against Argentina next Tuesday in an attempt to qualify for the quarter-finals.'
Historic Achievement
Hossam Hassan led the Egyptian national team to surpass the group stage for the first time in its history in the tournament, after finishing second in Group 7 with five points, then continued to make history by overcoming Australia in the Round of 32. The Egyptian coach dreams of continuing the journey and overcoming the defending champions, Argentina, despite the difficulty of the task.
