The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has officially assigned Salvadoran referee Iván Barton to officiate the decisive match between the French and Spanish national teams in the semi-final of the 2026 World Cup, scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday.

Barton will be assisted by a Central American refereeing crew, including his compatriot David Morán as first assistant, along with Antonio Popero from Nicaragua as second assistant, while Swedish official Glenn Nyberg will serve as the fourth referee.

The Salvadoran referee is experiencing his first advanced knockout stage of the World Cup, after officiating three matches in the current edition, the first of which was between Turkey and Paraguay in the group stage, which saw Paraguayan player Miguel Almirón sent off for covering his mouth.

Barton continued his refereeing journey by officiating the match between Japan and Sweden also in the first round, before being assigned to lead the exciting round of 16 match between Switzerland and Colombia, which was decided by a penalty shootout in favor of the Swiss national team.

This assignment marks a qualitative leap in the career of the Salvadoran referee, who previously participated in the 2022 World Cup edition, where he also officiated three matches, the last of which was the match between England and Senegal in the round of 16.
