England winger Anthony Gordon has responded to the obscene remark made by former Mexico coach Javier Aguirre, which went viral during a match between the two teams in the World Cup.

During a water break in the first half, Aguirre first spoke to midfielder Jude Bellingham before calling over Gordon as they neared the touchline, during England's thrilling 3-2 win over Mexico in the Round of 16 at the Azteca Stadium.

The 67-year-old coach then made a remark containing an obscenity directed at the English forward, before both burst into laughter.

BBC Sport published Gordon's comments, in which he said, 'I remember what Aguirre said. It was just a joke.'

He added, 'With all the heat and tension surrounding the match, it was just a moment of fun.'

He continued, 'I had just beaten the full-back on the line moments before, so I took it as a kind of compliment. That's how I understood it.'

He concluded, 'The match was full of tension, so I liked that he was talking to me and Bellingham during the game.'

That was one of several amusing moments in the match that went viral on social media, including Harry Kane's post-match interview after losing his voice, as well as England defender John Stones faking an injury.

Aguirre left the Mexico national team after their World Cup exit, and the role was handed to Rafael Márquez.
