Friday: Portugal to unveil Jesus in press conference
AFP reported Thursday that Jorge Jesus, the former coach of Al-Nassr, will be presented as the new head coach of the Portuguese national team, succeeding Spaniard Roberto Martínez, according to a source close to the matter. The same source indicated that the 71-year-old Portuguese coach and the Portuguese Football Federation have reached a 'full agreement' and will hold a press conference on Friday at 3:00 PM Portuguese time at the federation's headquarters near Lisbon. Jesus takes over Portugal following their elimination in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, after a 1-0 loss to Spain. The Portuguese coach, who left Al-Nassr, champions of the Saudi Pro League, last May, will sign a four-year contract until the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. Jesus, a veteran in Portuguese football, has managed dozens of clubs in his country, most notably Benfica and Sporting, the two Lisbon giants. Abroad, he has coached Brazil's Flamengo, Turkey's Fenerbahçe, and later Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr, leading the latter, which includes his compatriot star Cristiano Ronaldo, to the league title. After Portugal's elimination, Ronaldo, 41, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, confirmed that this was his sixth and final World Cup, without revealing whether he intends to continue his international career. With Portugal, whom he has led since 2023, Roberto Martínez won the Nations League title in June 2025.
