While most uses of artificial intelligence in film and television have been controversial, Google has offered a counterexample with its AI, Gemini.

This experiment involves a goal scored by Brazilian football legend Pelé in 1959, described as the best goal of his career. To score, Pelé dribbled past defenders with brilliance, then flicked the ball with his knee past the goalkeeper before heading it into the net with a precise header.

What's the story?

This goal is considered a rare sight even at the highest levels of professional football. But the problem is that the goal was never filmed, according to a report by Digital Trends, a tech news site, seen by Al Arabiya Business.

Thousands of fans and players present in the stadium at the time witnessed this goal, and only a few of them are still alive today. The only archival memory of the goal was an old photo documenting the moment of the header.

Pelé scored this legendary goal on August 2, 1959, when he was 18 years old, during a match between his team Santos and Brazilian club Juventus at Rua Javari Stadium in São Paulo. The goal later became known as "Gol da Rua Javari," and for decades it was described as the best goal of Pelé's career and one of the most famous goals in football history.

To recreate this iconic goal, Google's team interviewed people who witnessed the event with their own eyes more than six decades ago and reconstructed the sequence of Pelé's moves. They then used images of the stadium, the crowd, and the players on the field to build a conception of how the events unfolded leading to the goal.

After that, Google's team reenacted the entire scene using real people at the same stadium where Pelé scored the goal.

To ensure accuracy, the team crafted the heavy leather ball used in that era, along with Pelé's dark boots and even the sportswear worn by the players.

The entire movement was recorded in a manner similar to the motion capture technique used in filmmaking, but without the usual specialized clothing and equipment.

Then, all this data was fed into an AI-based system, and Google used the Gemini Omni model, the Nano Banana Pro image generator, and the Google Veo video engine to reframe the scenes and give them an old-fashioned look resembling historical photographs.

The individuals who performed the scene were also replaced (the person wearing the famous number 10 jersey was replaced with a digital version mimicking Pelé's features), and the entire stadium was recreated as it was during that historic 1959 match.

A revived achievement

Google said on its blog: "To ensure the generated scenes looked as era-accurate as possible, we passed the digital outputs through a dedicated device to convert them into cinematic film, capturing the distinctive look and feel of 1950s movies."

This required a great deal of work, but the final result was stunning by all measures. Watching Pelé's legendary goal come to life on video for the first time, with all its exceptional ball control and on-field creativity, is a sight worth seeing.

What sets this project apart from typical commercial uses of AI is that it was carried out with the approval of Pelé's family and with support from real football players, fans, and historians.

Google quoted Pelé's daughter as saying: "He would be so proud to see all this happening. He always said it was a shame that goal was never recorded on video. So being able to bring it back to life using all this technology is amazing."
