Hossam Hassan: What Am I to Do? And From Whom Do I Choose?
The technical director of the Egyptian national team, Captain Hossam Hassan, called for a review of the foreign players' regulations in the domestic league, proposing to reduce their number from 5 to 3 players, considering that the team's experience in the 2026 World Cup highlighted the importance of giving Egyptian players a greater opportunity to participate regularly with clubs.
In television statements, he said that reducing the number of foreigners to only 3 players would contribute to increasing the number of minutes for Egyptian players, which would positively reflect on the national team's choices in upcoming competitions.
He added: The abundance of foreign players in club rosters puts the national team's coaching staff before a great challenge, explaining that having only 3 foreigners would give Egyptian players a greater opportunity to participate.
He pointed out that some teams rely on a large number of foreign players in the starting lineup, saying: '8 out of 11 players on the field are foreigners, so what will the national team coach do? And from which team will he choose?' Hossam Hassan means by this number the inclusion of some players who are treated by league regulations as local players, such as Palestinian players, which effectively reduces the number of Egyptian players available for selection.
Hossam Hassan stressed that the Egyptian national team participated in the last World Cup relying on players from the domestic league, making providing participation opportunities for Egyptian elements in the local competition a technical necessity to broaden the selection base and maintain the readiness of international players.
