Jürgen Klopp was appointed on Friday as the new head coach of the German national football team, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned after a disappointing campaign in the 2026 North America World Cup.

Bernd Neuendorf, president of the German Football Association (DFB), said in a press conference in Frankfurt: 'We are very happy to be able to introduce Jürgen Klopp as our new coach today.'

Neuendorf explained that Klopp's contract will run until 'summer 2030, i.e., until the next World Cup in Morocco, Spain, and Portugal', noting that the contract will come into effect on August 15. Klopp himself said: 'It is the perfect pinnacle of my career, my life, and my working life. I will put all my energy into this task.'

He also warned that he would leave his post if the press attacks him in the future, saying: 'If you say tomorrow that I am very bad, I will leave.'

Nagelsmann had resigned four days after elimination by Paraguay in the round of 32 of the World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Nagelsmann (38) had held the position since September 2023, but after the round of 32 exit, the German Football Association met with him for three hours to discuss the new failure.

Klopp, who had been under contract since the beginning of 2025 until the end of 2029 with Red Bull as its Global Head of Football Operations, publicly expressed his desire to take on the role.

The green light came from Oliver Mintzlaff, CEO of Red Bull, who held a meeting with DFB officials after they reached a preliminary agreement with the coach.

Neuendorf confirmed that Klopp was released from his contract without a transfer fee, in exchange for a donation of just one million euros to the Red Bull foundation 'Wings for Life', dedicated to spinal cord injury research.

Germany has struggled in the last three World Cup tournaments, being eliminated in the group stage in 2018 and 2022.

Since losing to France in the Euro 2016 semi-finals, Germany has not reached the semi-finals of any major tournament, an unprecedented decade-long drought for a team that has also been European champion three times (1972, 1980, 1996).

Klopp previously had successful coaching stints with Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, before taking over Liverpool in England, where he led them to the English league title in 2020, ending a 30-year drought, a year after winning the Champions League.

In January 2024, he announced he would leave Liverpool at the end of the season, after nine years with the club since his arrival in autumn 2015. Since January 1, 2025, he has held the position of Global Head of Football at Red Bull, overseeing the clubs affiliated with the Austrian company.
