Marquez Takes Pole Position for German Grand Prix
Spanish rider Marc Marquez, Ducati team rider, current world champion, dominated the qualifying session for the German Grand Prix, the 11th round of the MotoGP World Championship, on Saturday. Marquez said after qualifying: 'My goal was to start from the front row, but starting from first place, especially setting the fastest lap here at Sachsenring, is fantastic.' Marquez beat his younger brother Alex from Ducati-Gresini, and Italian Fabio Di Giannantonio, Ducati-VR46 rider. This is the ninth time in the premier class that Marquez starts from pole position at the German Sachsenring circuit, making him the first rider in history to achieve this feat. Marquez secured his spot at the front of the grid by setting a new all-time lap record of 1:19.041 minutes. The 33-year-old Spanish rider, nicknamed 'King of the Ring,' aims on Sunday to claim his 13th overall victory at the German circuit, and his 10th in the MotoGP class. A win would allow the Spanish rider to equal two records held by Italian legend Giacomo Agostini: the most victories in a single race (13) and the most wins at the same circuit in the premier class (10). The final qualifying session before the main race on Sunday saw Italian rider Marco Bezzecchi, Aprilia rider, suffer a heavy crash, resulting in a fracture of his left collarbone, and he will undergo surgery soon, according to his team. Two weeks after a crash at 200 km/h in the Netherlands without injury, Bezzecchi this time lost control of the rear of his bike at over 130 km/h, flipped over the handlebars in a 'highside' before falling back onto the track, then bouncing several times in the gravel. Bezzecchi, 27, who dominated the start of the championship after winning four races, including the first three opening rounds, currently sits second in the standings after surrendering the lead to his Spanish teammate Jorge Martin in the Netherlands. Martin could only manage ninth place in qualifying behind Bezzecchi before his crash, which now leaves him out of competition for the rest of the weekend.
