Catalonia's regional police said a 54-year-old worker died on Friday while working on the Camp Nou redevelopment project, belonging to Barcelona, the Spanish league champions.

This is the first recorded death at the construction site since renovation work began in June 2023.

Emergency services were called to the stadium, but the worker could not be saved. He is believed to have died from a blow.

An investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances of the incident.

The reconstruction of Camp Nou began three years ago, but has slowed due to licensing complications and complaints about working conditions, among other factors.

The redevelopment project is currently focused, in part, on installing a compression ring designed to support the stadium's roof structure.

Work is expected to be completed by early 2028, when it will accommodate 105,000 spectators, a record for European stadiums.\"); googletag.cmd.push(function() { onDvtagReady(function () { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-3341368-4'); }); }); }
