Samir Nasri Arrested on Money Laundering and Drug Trafficking Charges
French football star Samir Nasri fell into police custody, spending a full 10 hours in detention in a case of organized money laundering linked to drug trafficking, before being released without formal charges so far.
The French newspaper Le Parisian revealed that the former Arsenal, Manchester City, and France national team player was interrogated on Thursday at the headquarters of the Financial Investigations and Research Brigade (BRIF), as part of an ongoing judicial investigation into drug trafficking, criminal conspiracy, and money laundering by an organized group.
The threads of the case trace back to Nasri, of Algerian descent, investing several hundred thousand euros in 2016 in the nightclub XS in the city of Évry-sur-Seine, during his time playing for Manchester City. According to the newspaper, the player later became a co-owner of the club, a position that made him a target of a large-scale investigation into organized money laundering.
Le Parisian confirmed that the current sports analyst for Canal+ left the police headquarters on Thursday evening after a lengthy hearing, without any charges being brought against him at this stage, but he may be called back for questioning if the prosecution decides to formally indict him.
The detention of Nasri, 38, comes as a shock to the French sports community. The player, who came through the ranks of Olympique Marseille and earned 41 international caps for the 'Roosters,' transitioned from a Premier League star to a television analyst, only to find his name now linked to investigations into the world of organized crime.
As of now, French authorities have not taken any legal action against Nasri, but the judicial investigation remains open, and the possibility of being summoned again has not been closed.
