Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi congratulated the national football team on Friday evening on qualifying for the round of 16 in the 2026 World Cup, following a 4-2 penalty shootout win over Australia after a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time.

El-Sisi said via his social media account: "I congratulate the sons of Egypt, the heroes of the national team, on this historic achievement of qualifying for the round of 16 of the World Cup for the first time in the team's history."

He added: "You have proven that belief in ability, competing as a team, and determination to win achieve accomplishments," wishing the Pharaohs success in the upcoming matches.

The Egyptian team will face in the round of 16 the winner of the match between Argentina and Cape Verde, in its first appearance at this stage since its participation in the World Cup.
