End of Spanish coach Martinez's contract with Portugal national team
The Portuguese Football Federation announced today the end of Spanish coach Roberto Martinez's contract with the senior national team, following their elimination in the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a statement, the federation thanked Martinez and his coaching staff for their professionalism and dedication over the past three and a half years, which saw the Portuguese national team win the UEFA Nations League title in 2025.
The statement noted that the federation president has initiated the process of selecting a new coach, aiming to continue enhancing the team's ambitions and cement a winning culture in future competitions.
Martinez had announced after Portugal's loss to Spain in the round of 16 that the match was his last with the team, confirming the end of his contract, and indicating that the federation now has the freedom to choose a new coach.
The Spanish coach said he had taken charge of the team with the aim of winning the World Cup, adding that failing to achieve that goal meant the end of the chapter for him.
