Lena Selnes, the partner of Norwegian striker Alexander Sørloth, has decided to take legal action after receiving abusive messages via email and social media platforms.

Following Norway's exit from the World Cup quarter-finals against England, Lena Selnes was forced to break her silence on her Instagram account to respond to the wave of hatred targeting her partner and national team player Alexander Sørloth.

Selnes, who is followed by more than 40,000 people, shared examples of the abusive messages she received via her Stories, including: "Please commit suicide, you fool!" and "Tell your boyfriend to leave Norway and jump off a cliff!"

Selnes, the mother of Sørloth's two children, commented on the incident, according to Norwegian site TV2: "The World Cup brings a lot of joy, but it also brings a lot of hatred."

She added: "I didn't want to give these comments any attention, but after messages of this level, silence became impossible."

She pointed out: "I hope everyone thinks carefully before writing such comments, whatever the circumstances."

For his part, Ståle Solbakken, the head coach of the Norwegian national team, strongly condemned this campaign, describing what happened as "tragic," adding: "This is the reality we live in today."

He continued: "That's why I advise young players to stay as far away from social media as possible."

It is worth noting that Sørloth started in all of Norway's World Cup matches except the clash with France, and was substituted during the loss to England. The striker failed to score any goals during the tournament.
