Tennis Rankings: Zverev Ousts Alcaraz from Second Place
German tennis player Alexander Zverev moved up to second in the ATP rankings released Monday, displacing Spain's Carlos Alcaraz, thanks to his run to the Wimbledon final, which he lost Sunday to top-ranked Italian Jannik Sinner. Sinner retained his title on the Wimbledon grass after defeating Zverev 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 6-4, denying the German a third Grand Slam title to add to his Roland Garros victory weeks ago, his first major. The 29-year-old German moves ahead of Alcaraz, last year's Wimbledon runner-up, who was unable to defend his points at the All England Club due to a wrist injury that also forced him to withdraw from Roland Garros. Serbia's Novak Djokovic, who reached the Wimbledon semifinals before losing to Sinner, rose one spot to seventh. After causing the biggest surprise by reaching the semifinals, where his run ended against Zverev, 24-year-old British player Arthur Fery jumped 78 places to 36th from 114th. After the new rankings were released, the Briton said: "I will be able to play ATP tournaments for at least a year; it will be interesting to see how I handle this change and all the expectations that come with it." Fery was born in France, grew up in London, and his father Loïc Fery is president of FC Lorient, while his mother Olivia Gravereaux is a former professional tennis player. Among the women, Czech Linda Noskova entered the top 10, becoming seventh in her best ranking after winning her first Grand Slam title at age 21 by defeating her compatriot Karolina Muchova in the Wimbledon final. Noskova rose five places, directly behind runner-up Muchova, who herself climbed three spots to sixth after reaching the final, which she lost 2-6, 7-5, 3-6. Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka held on to the world No. 1 ranking despite exiting Wimbledon in the fourth round to Japan's Naomi Osaka. Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina remained at No. 2 after also losing in the third round to Belgium's Elise Mertens. American Jessica Pegula, who reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals, moved up to third directly ahead of her compatriot Coco Gauff, whom she defeated in London, before the 22-year-old's run ended in the semifinals against Muchova, allowing her to rise from seventh to fourth.
