All riders still participating in the Tour de France underwent doping tests during the rest day on Monday, according to a statement from the International Testing Agency (ITA), the body responsible for anti-doping.

Several teams, including Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe which features Belgian Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel, announced on Tuesday that their riders had undergone tests the previous evening.

This followed controversial tests conducted in the early hours of Sunday, targeting race leader Tadej Pogačar of Slovenia and his main rival Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark, with the latter withdrawing from the tour after an accident, hours after being woken at 2 a.m. by anti-doping inspectors.

The International Testing Agency said in a statement late Tuesday evening: 'The ITA confirms the implementation of a comprehensive blood sampling campaign under the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) during the rest day of the Tour de France on July 20, 2026.'

It added: 'The testing campaign included all riders in the race, as part of the agency's ongoing anti-doping program based on intelligence gathering and risk assessment during the race.'

The ITA did not disclose any results, and a spokesperson told AFP that processing the results would take weeks.

The agency explained that the Athlete Biological Passport 'is not intended to directly detect a prohibited substance or method,' but rather 'monitors specific biological variables over time to detect changes that may indicate the effects of doping.'

Several riders, including Pogačar and Evenepoel, described the nighttime tests as 'inhumane' and showing disrespect to athletes.

The Professional Cyclists Association (CPA) also criticized these measures, stating that they could negatively affect riders' rest and recovery between the demanding stages of the Tour de France.
