The trophy ceremony for Spain's World Cup win witnessed a striking scene after US President Donald Trump refused to leave the podium during the players' celebration with the trophy, a situation reminiscent of what happened during last year's FIFA Club World Cup final.

After Spain's 1-0 victory over Argentina, Trump climbed onto the podium alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino, where they handed the trophy to Spanish captain Rodri, who was also named the tournament's best player.

However, after handing over the trophy, Trump did not leave the podium as is customary, but remained standing next to the Spanish players as they lifted the trophy, even performing his famous dance for the cameras, a scene that sparked much controversy.

According to The Telegraph, Infantino tried to persuade Trump to leave the podium to make way for the players to celebrate, approaching him and gesturing for him to step away, but the US president ignored his request, while the FIFA president appeared embarrassed as he watched Trump continue standing with the team.

Trump and Infantino had watched the match from the main VIP section behind bulletproof glass amid tight security at MetLife Stadium, before being greeted with jeers from the crowd as they walked onto the pitch after the match.

During the ceremony, most of the Spanish players shook hands with Trump as they received their medals and the trophy. Among the attendees was Yasser Al-Rumayyan, governor of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and chairman of Newcastle United, who shook hands with Trump and Infantino on the podium.

Hours before the match, Trump gave an interview to Fox Sports in which he publicly called on Infantino to have the United States host the World Cup again during his lifetime.

Trump praised the attendance rate announced by FIFA, which reached 99.9 percent throughout the tournament, saying it exceeded his expectations, but suggested that another country host the next edition before the tournament returns to the United States, in his words, to 'mitigate the shock and anger.'

Trump said: 'I had an idea for Gianni. When the project started, I told him we would host the tournament, and there were those who expected empty stadiums, but that didn't happen.'

He added: 'I saw that the attendance rate was 99.9 percent, and I think it was even higher because the stadiums were almost completely full. So I suggested to Gianni that he announce granting the United States the hosting rights again, then give the following edition to another country, because that would mitigate the shock and anger.'

He concluded: 'I think it's a great idea. Based on these numbers, we will ask to host the tournament again as soon as possible. I told him: Announce that we have won the hosting rights, then give the next edition to another country, but we must host the World Cup again while I'm still here... Did you hear me, Gianni?'
