3 Common Problems in Meta Quest 3 and Solutions for Each

The Meta Quest 3 is one of the latest and best virtual reality devices available, but it is not without problems. In this report, we review the most common problems you may encounter when using the Meta Quest 3 and how to solve them so you can return to enjoying games, surfing the internet, or doing spatial computing smoothly.
Resetting the Safety Boundary
Meta continuously improves spatial awareness technology in Quest devices, with the Quest 3 featuring a depth sensor that automatically scans your room to create a safe boundary.
This boundary, previously called Guardian, is a glowing grid that defines the safe area for movement within virtual reality environments.
Of course, you don't want to crash into the TV or table while playing games, so the boundary is essential in VR, while it is less important in augmented reality.
If you move to another room, the Meta Quest 3 detects that and scans the new room to create a boundary appropriate for the new space. But what happens when you go upstairs? You may see the glowing outline of the old boundary below your current location.
If this confusion occurs with the Quest 3, you need to create a new boundary.
Open Quick Settings by selecting the clock/Wi-Fi/battery icons at the bottom left.
Select Boundary and switch to a different mode than the current one.
For example, if you are in Stationary Boundary mode, choose Roomscale Boundary, and vice versa.
If your problem is losing the boundary, the only way to continue in VR is to create a new boundary.
Creating a detailed room boundary with doors, windows, and furniture may take a few minutes, but it's the only solution if your Quest 3 game or app requires room-scale boundary features for mixed reality.

Motion Tracking Problem
Another common issue is loss of motion tracking. When this happens, the Quest 3 usually alerts you. If you notice the virtual environment not matching your movements, you should correct the tracking issue immediately to prevent motion sickness.
The tracking sensors on the Quest 3 may not see enough light, making them unable to determine your position in space. Turning on more lights or moving to a brighter room may help resolve the tracking issue.
Also, a dirty or contaminated sensor may not be able to see even in a well-lit room.
Therefore, clean the three dark shapes on the front of the Quest 3 with a microfiber cloth. Also wipe the two small circles below the bottom edge, one on the left and one on the right.
The Quest 3 Touch Plus controllers have infrared LEDs invisible to the human eye.
So, cleaning your controllers can help solve the motion tracking loss issue. Additionally, if controller batteries run out, you will also lose tracking.
Another reason for tracking loss is possible processor overload, which is unlikely with the fast Qualcomm XR2 Gen 2 chip in the Quest 3, but sometimes happened with older Meta Quest devices.
If your device seems sluggish, take a 15-minute break to let it cool down, then try again.
Short Battery Life
It's frustrating to get a low battery warning while enjoying a movie or even working on the Quest 3. The Quest 3, like the Quest Pro and Quest 2, and even the Apple Vision Pro, has a battery life of about two to two and a half hours.
You can keep the Quest 3 always ready for use by using Meta's charging dock.
If the battery life is not enough for you, you can slightly increase runtime by switching the Quest 3 to Battery Saver Mode. Your device will try to save power without significantly affecting performance.
Open Settings, then select System and Power.
In that panel, enable Battery Saver. Note that brightness will decrease, sharpness may drop, and frame rates are likely to decrease.
The Quest 3 can update the display at up to 120 frames per second, while some other best VR headsets run at only 90 fps. This means it's possible to reduce processing by 75% simply by lowering the refresh rate to 90 Hz.
If 50% brightness is too dark, you can raise it in Quick Settings and Battery Saver will remain on to help in other ways.
Battery Saver helps with the short battery life problem, but the extra time you get is measured in minutes, not hours. For a more useful battery upgrade, you'll need an external battery.
Meta makes many great Quest 3 accessories that are guaranteed to work with your device. The Meta Quest 3 Elite Strap with Battery gives you two extra hours of runtime and improves the head strap with a more comfortable and easily adjustable rigid halo strap.
It costs $130, so looking for better deals is worthwhile.
Overall, the Meta Quest 3 is a great VR device with a high level of reliability.
But if you encounter any problem, these tips will help you solve it so you can resume enjoying your virtual space.
Make sure to update your Quest 3 to the latest firmware version.
If you cannot solve the problem yourself, you can contact Meta support for help.
