After 25 Years, Google Redesigns ‘Image Search’ with a Smart New Interface
Google announced a major update to the homepage interface of its Google Images service, coinciding with its 25th anniversary, as it will transform from a simple search page into an interactive space that displays suggested images to users before they start searching.
The company explained that the new page includes a dynamic, browsable gallery that displays images from across the web updated in real time, with content personalized according to each user's interests based on artificial intelligence technologies.
Images released by Google show a new design similar to platforms like Pinterest, allowing users to browse a large number of images through continuous scrolling, with the ability to save images in 'Collections' for later reference, and these collections will appear in tabs at the top of the page for easy access.
Google confirmed that the new interface will begin rolling out gradually over the coming weeks for computer users logged into their accounts in the United States, in English, and will later expand to more users worldwide.
In another update, the company revealed that the traditional search service will soon gain the ability to generate images directly within the 'AI Overviews' feature, based on the Nano Banana 2 Lite image generation model.
Google noted that the feature aims to help users visualize ideas, such as comparing home decor options or creating preliminary design concepts, using text prompts like 'Help me visualize' or 'Create a visual concept'.
The company has not yet disclosed the precise criteria that trigger image generation within AI Overviews, nor has it explained the mechanisms it relies on to prevent AI-generated images in sensitive cases, such as news and current events, where creating fake images could mislead users.
