On Saturday, the Argentine Football Association issued a statement clarifying that its official website was hacked by Egyptian hackers after events of the Egypt-Argentina match in the World Cup.

The Egyptian national team faced its Argentine counterpart last Tuesday evening as part of the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.

The match witnessed major refereeing controversy with the disallowance of one of the tournament's most spectacular goals for Egypt, causing an unprecedented angry reaction towards French referee François Letexier.

The Argentine Association announced that its systems were hacked by Egyptian hackers who sent mass emails claiming that Egypt's victory was stolen by corrupt refereeing decisions.

Some celebrities in the Argentine media also received threats of further cyberattacks if justice was not served.

According to the English newspaper The Mirror, a group of Egyptian hackers breached part of the association's database and obtained email addresses, passwords, IP addresses, and confidential information.

Due to this incident, the Argentine Association said in a statement: 'Dear colleagues, we would like to inform you that we have discovered the possibility of emails being sent from one of our institutional accounts that were not created or authorized by our team.'

The statement continued: 'Given this situation and while necessary investigations are being conducted with the IT department, we wish to inform you to ignore any messages you have recently received from our account.'

It added: 'There is a possibility that our account has been hacked, so we are working to clarify what happened and take the necessary security measures.'

The statement concluded: 'Our systems are equipped with appropriate security and protection measures. Thank you very much for your attention and cooperation.'
