Samsung officially announced its two new foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra, with a range of improvements, most notably the new protective layer for the book-style foldable screens.

The company confirmed in response to press inquiries that the cover screens of both phones are reinforced with Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3.

This upgrade is a significant leap compared to the previous Fold 7 generation, which used Gorilla Glass 2. Corning lab tests indicate that Ceramic 3 can withstand drops from over two meters onto surfaces simulating concrete, double the capacity of Ceramic 2, which only holds up to one meter.

For a quick comparison, the Galaxy S26 Ultra is protected by Gorilla Armor 2 and offers drop resistance up to 2.2 meters. This makes the new protection on the Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra close to that of Samsung’s latest flagship phones.
