Google enables users to create digital avatars via Google Vids
Google announced new updates to Google Vids that allow users to create a personal digital avatar mimicking their appearance and voice using a selfie and audio recording, aiming to enhance the platform's capabilities beyond traditional work presentations and transform it into a comprehensive AI video creation tool.
The new feature relies on creating a digital copy linked to the account holder, as the system uses a selfie and audio recording to produce an avatar capable of appearing in videos with the user's voice and appearance.
Gemini Omni improves video creation
Google revealed the integration of its multimodal model Gemini Omni into Google Vids, enabling video creation based on text prompts and reference images uploaded by the user, as the model combines these elements and turns them into a complete AI-generated video.
New capabilities also include editing video backgrounds, improving lighting in clips shot on smartphones, and easily adding visual effects.
Google explained that Gemini Omni now supports step-by-step video editing, allowing users to make sequential changes while working without needing to recreate the entire video with each edit.
From a presentation tool to an integrated platform
These updates mark a shift in the role of Google Vids, which was originally launched as an AI-powered tool for creating workplace presentations, now moving closer to specialized video production platforms.
Google aims to integrate Google Vids into the Google Workspace ecosystem for use in producing company updates, training clips, and corporate content, while expanding its use thanks to personal avatars and interactive editing features.
This is expected to put the platform in direct competition with specialized AI video creation services such as HeyGen, Synthesia, Captions, and D-ID.
Google confirmed that personal avatars will be linked to the user's Google account identity, with an invisible watermark via SynthID technology to help track AI-generated content and limit its misuse.
The company added that the personal avatar feature will be available only to users aged 18 and above, and in specific regions around the world.
