Rockstar Games announced that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be available only as a digital download, even through the physical edition, where buyers receive a box containing an activation code for digital download instead of a traditional disc.

This approach has raised many questions among the gaming community, especially since owning the disc allowed them to lend or resell it later, in addition to aspects related to collecting and preserving. Retailers have clarified that the GTA 6 download code will be single-use only.

Producers and analysts consider this step reflects a global shift in the industry, as Matt Piscatella, games industry consultant at Circana, reported that more than half of current Xbox Series consoles in the United States lack a disc drive, and the proportion is gradually increasing on PlayStation 5 as well.

As a result, many players have become fully reliant on downloading games digitally.

On the other hand, some observers and rights activists, such as the founder of the Stop Killing Games campaign, emphasized that the absence of the disc is a symptom of a deeper problem related to players' rights to actually own the game, especially with the possibility of losing access to the game if publishing servers are shut down in the future.

Rockstar has not yet commented on the reason for its decision, but some estimates attribute it to their desire to reduce data leaks and prevent game duplication before release, in addition to possibly seeking to avoid distributing old copies in the market at launch.

This comes at a time when companies like Nintendo are also leaning toward distributing download codes in stores instead of cartridges with content.

This step has led some retailers to refuse to sell the version that includes only the download code, in an attempt to preserve the value of game ownership for players, while some independent store owners have launched campaigns demanding the return of the traditional disc edition.
