The camera of Apple's next flagship phone may learn how to open and close its lens, as new leaks related to the iPhone 18 Pro Max have revealed calibration data for a main camera with a variable aperture.

This information was in a diagnostic log within files allegedly stolen from India's Tata Electronics, one of Apple's suppliers, and published by the ransomware group 'World Leaks'. Apple did not confirm the authenticity of this information or comment on the report.

The log indicates that the new main camera sensor will be a Sony IMX905, according to a report by technology news site Notebookcheck, seen by Al Arabiya Business.

The pixel size of 1.22 micrometers is said to match the previous generation of the phone, suggesting that the physical aperture mechanism will constitute the bulk of the upgrade, rather than a major increase in sensor size.

A wider aperture allows more light in and can produce a shallower depth of field, while narrowing the aperture expands the area that appears sharp in the image and provides greater control in bright lighting conditions.

This will give the upcoming iPhone greater flexibility in handling changing lighting conditions. This development adds a new hardware tool alongside the computational photography techniques that Apple relies on.

Variable aperture is already available in competing phones such as the Huawei Pura 90s Pro series, so it is not a new innovation in the smartphone industry, but it will be a first for iPhones.

According to the report, the rest of the iPhone 18 Pro Max camera system will remain unchanged compared to the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

The new main camera aperture appears to be the biggest change in Apple's photography capabilities this year, but buyers may have to pay more for it, as another report suggests the price of the iPhone 18 Pro Max could rise by around $200, with increased costs for camera and memory production.
