OpenAI Launches GPT-5.6 Models for All Users After US Approval
OpenAI announced the general release of its GPT-5.6 artificial intelligence models after receiving approval from the U.S. administration, following about two weeks after its announcement and limited availability to government-approved entities during a 'limited preview' phase.
The company's CEO Sam Altman described the model as 'the best model OpenAI has developed so far.'
Concurrent with the launch, the company unveiled ChatGPT Work, a new AI agent that combines the capabilities of ChatGPT and the AI programming platform Codex, aiming to enable non-specialist users to leverage Codex's capabilities to perform everyday tasks, not just programming.
ChatGPT Work is based on GPT-5.6 models which include models named Sol, Terra, and Luna, with the ability to collect data and context from applications, files, and workflows, then create ready-to-use documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and web applications.
The company began rolling out the GPT-5.6 models and the ChatGPT Work agent globally through the ChatGPT application on Windows and macOS devices, making them immediately available even to users with free accounts.
As for mobile and web, the features will first reach subscribers of Pro, Enterprise, and Edu plans, then to Plus and Business subscribers in the coming days, and the gradual global rollout will continue until complete within 24 hours, according to the company.
This step comes at a time when competition among AI companies to develop AI agents capable of performing practical tasks for users is accelerating, as OpenAI seeks to compete with solutions such as Anthropic's Claude Cowork, which combines the capabilities of Claude and Claude Code.
OpenAI is particularly relying on the Sol model, the most powerful model in the GPT-5.6 series, to deliver a new level of efficiency and intelligence, especially in programming, cybersecurity, scientific research, and using computers on behalf of users.
The company promotes the model as a lower-cost option compared to the most powerful competing models, amid increasing pressure on AI companies to reduce costs and offer services at more competitive prices.
