OpenAI has announced the discontinuation of the ChatGPT Atlas browser, which allowed users to perform tasks on the internet on their behalf, less than a year after its launch, as part of a new plan to unify the company's services within a single desktop application called ChatGPT Work.

The company confirmed that the browser, launched last October, will officially shut down on August 9, with in-app notifications and emails to be sent in the coming days containing guidance to help users transition to the new alternative.

The decision comes as part of OpenAI's shift to reduce what it calls "side projects" and focus on a unified platform combining its key services. The Wall Street Journal reported in March on the company's plan to integrate the ChatGPT app, the Codex programming platform, and the Atlas browser into what it described as a "Super App" for desktop, now realized as ChatGPT Work.

The new application includes a suite of AI tools in a single interface, including the Codex programming assistant, the ChatGPT Work productivity agent, and built-in web browsing capabilities, eliminating the need for a standalone browser.

ChatGPT Atlas was first launched for Mac devices, and the company later added browsing capabilities to the Codex app. With the launch of ChatGPT Work, OpenAI decided to integrate the browser into a single application to simplify the user experience.

Even with the discontinuation of the standalone browser, users will still be able to browse the internet through the built-in tools in ChatGPT Work, and the company will continue to support the official ChatGPT extension for the Chrome browser, which provides AI capabilities within the browser without needing to install a separate browser.

The discontinuation of ChatGPT Atlas is part of a series of steps OpenAI has taken to restructure its products. In recent months, it also discontinued the standalone Sora video generation app and suspended plans for a "Adult Mode" in ChatGPT, as part of its focus on developing a unified platform that gathers its most important services to compete with the rapid growth of competing services from Anthropic and Google, especially in the enterprise sector.
