Science and Technology / King Abdulaziz University Ranks Seventh Worldwide in Underwater Robotics Competition in Canada
Jeddah, 28 Muharram 1448 AH, corresponding to July 13, 2026, SPA -- The 'Red Sea Pioneers' team from King Abdulaziz University achieved seventh place globally in the finals of the World Underwater Robotics Championship, in the PIONEER category, after scoring (374.67) points in the competitions hosted by Memorial University in Canada, with the participation of (35) universities from around the world. The achievement came after the team developed an advanced remotely operated robotic submarine, designed according to an integrated engineering system that allows the execution of exploratory and engineering tasks in complex marine environments, through the integration of control and sensing systems, which enhanced its efficiency in maneuvering and operating under various conditions. The project took about two years to implement inside the Manufacturing Club of the Deanship of Student Affairs, which provided a stimulating environment for developing applied skills and innovation among university students, and contributed to transforming the project into an engineering model capable of competing in one of the most prominent international specialized competitions in marine robotics. The evaluation criteria in the championship, in addition to the field performance of the submarine, included engineering and practical presentations, technical documents, marketing presentation, collaborative mission, and safety and corporate responsibility standards, simulating the requirements of professional work in the marine and technical sectors. The project received support from King Abdulaziz University, the Scientific Endowment, and Johnson Controls Arabia, embodying the importance of partnership between academic institutions and supporting entities in empowering national competencies and enhancing their presence in international forums, reflecting the quality of educational outputs and the ability of Saudi youth to achieve scientific and engineering accomplishments at the global level. // End // 14:56 T.M. 0098
