Turkish nuclear technology company Nuklein and Canadian investment company Portland Holdings Investco signed a memorandum of understanding, supported by the Turkish Nuclear Industry Association, to support and develop Turkey's nuclear energy system.

According to a statement by the association on Thursday, the memorandum of understanding, which focuses on modern nuclear technologies and small nuclear reactors, sets a strategic framework for long-term partnerships that will strengthen Turkey's nuclear energy system.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Alijan Çiftçi, head of the Nuclear Industry Association, and Rogerio Tepe, chief operating officer of Portland Holdings.

The cooperation aims to combine Canada's advanced nuclear system with Turkey's growing vision in nuclear energy, through human resources development and training, technological cooperation, and raising awareness in this regard.

Koray Tuncar, board member of Nuklein, said in the statement that the agreement will pave the way for new partnerships between Turkey and Canada in nuclear energy.

Tuncar noted that Portland Holdings will contribute its commercial expertise, international relations, and strategic vision to the development of Turkey's advanced nuclear energy sector.

It is worth noting that Turkey launched the first phase of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant in Mersin, southern Turkey, in April 2023. It is the country's first nuclear power plant and one of its largest investments.

Construction work at the plant continues under an agreement signed between Turkey and Russia in 2010, with all units scheduled to become operational in 2028.
