The floods in the northeastern Indian state of Assam have killed at least 50 people and displaced 700,000 after days of heavy monsoon rains caused the Brahmaputra River to overflow.

The river, one of Asia's largest, flows for 900 kilometers (about 560 miles) through Assam. Its waters swept through villages, washed away homes, and forced about 300,000 people to seek shelter in government-run relief camps, according to officials. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said authorities had provided food and relief supplies to flood victims, including airdrops from helicopters.

He added that about 900 villages were submerged and electricity was cut off to more than 7,000 homes.
