The floods in the northeastern Indian state of Assam have killed at least 50 people and displaced 700,000, after days of heavy monsoon rains caused the Brahmaputra River to overflow its banks.
The river, one of the largest in Asia, which flows for 900 kilometers (about 560 miles) through Assam, swept through villages, washed away homes and forced some 300,000 people to seek shelter in government-run relief camps, according to officials. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said: "The authorities have provided food and relief supplies to flood victims, including airdrops from helicopters."
He added: "About 900 villages have been submerged and power has been cut off to more than 7,000 homes."
